Mill Lane Road Closure: Latest Bus Service & Travel Updates
31 July, 2026

Treeton Parish Council has requested temporary bus stops near the junction of Front Street and Well Lane. This would reduce the distance passengers need to walk uphill, avoiding the need to travel to Wood Lane or High Hazel Road to catch a bus.
Current Bus Routes
Rotherham-bound buses enter Treeton via Wood Lane, Front Street and Well Lane to Bolehill, before leaving via Well Lane, High Hazel Road and returning to Aughton Crossroads.
Catcliffe-bound buses enter Treeton via High Hazel Road and Well Lane to Bolehill, before leaving via Well Lane, Front Street and Wood Lane to Aughton Crossroads.
Pedestrian, Cycle and Mobility Scooter Access
Yorkshire Water has assured the Parish Council that one pavement beyond the road closure will remain open at all times for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooter users travelling to and from Catcliffe.
Bus Connections During the Mill Lane Closure
Residents wishing to walk to Catcliffe or connect with the 95 and 73 bus services can view the revised timetables on the South Yorkshire Transport website.
Please note:
- A temporary bus stop has been installed on Rotherham Road, near the junction of Orgreave Lane in Handsworth, allowing passengers to transfer from the 195 Shuttle Service to Sheffield-bound 95 and 73 services.
- A temporary bus stop has been installed at the top of Well Lane, near Front Street, for Catcliffe-bound buses.
- We have been informed that drivers have been instructed to pick up passengers anywhere within Treeton where it is safe to do so.
- Drivers should also pick up passengers at any recognised bus stop on the way into Treeton. From experience, some drivers may not always notice waiting passengers, so please make yourself as visible as possible when requesting a stop.
Travel Options to Sheffield from the 195 Shuttle Bus
Passengers using the 195 Shuttle Service can connect with Sheffield services using the following routes:
- Change at Swallownest to catch the X5 service to Sheffield.
- Change on Retford Road at Woodhouse Mill, or just beyond Beaver Hill Road, to catch the 52 service to Sheffield.
- On the Rotherham-bound 195 service, passengers can alight on West Bawtry Road, just beyond the Whiston traffic lights, to connect with:
- X7 express service to Sheffield
- X11 express service to Sheffield
- 207 service to Sheffield via Brinsworth and Meadowhall
Passengers can also change from the 195 service at Pleasley Road or Aughton to connect with Services 20 and 21 to Rotherham via Rotherham Hospital.

The 71 service has been diverted from Swallownest to Woodhouse Mill, then along Rotherham Road and Highfield Lane (Waverley Estate) before rejoining its normal route at Catcliffe and continuing to Sheffield. The return journey follows the same diversion.
There is now an earlier morning service and a later evening service each day. Buses should arrive at Swallownest and Catcliffe in line with the published timetable.
Other Roadworks Affecting Local Travel
The following roadworks are expected to affect traffic and may cause delays to the 195 Shuttle Service, particularly during busy periods.
Swallownest Road Closure
27 July to 30 August 2026
Traffic lights will also be in operation on Aughton Road, near Aston Comprehensive School.
Rotherham Road Gas Works
From 07:00 on 27 July until 19:00 on 31 August 2026
Rotherham Road will be closed between its junctions with Aughton Road and Park Street due to gas works.
Handsworth
27 July to 9 August 2026
Rotherham Road between Retford Road and Orgreave Lane will be closed, resulting in a diversion for the 195 Shuttle Service.
National Grid Works on Long Lane
Traffic lights between Ulley Brook and the M1 will remain in place until October 2026.
Treeton Parish Council is disappointed that these traffic lights will remain throughout the Mill Lane closure period. The traffic management arrangements were approved by the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) Highways Department.
Following enquiries, it appears that National Grid informed RMBC several months ago about its planned works. However, Yorkshire Water reportedly informed RMBC Highways of the Mill Lane works much later.
Residents can view notified roadworks across the Rotherham area via the One Network website.
Treeton Parish Council Continues to Raise Residents’ Concerns
Treeton Parish Council will continue to seek clarification on outstanding issues relating to:
- Bus services
- Accessibility for less mobile residents
- Road closures
- Traffic management associated with the Yorkshire Water works in Treeton, Catcliffe, Brinsworth and the surrounding areas
Further updates will be published as information becomes available.
