Hanging Baskets Finally Return to Treeton

30 July, 2026

After a delay of almost two months, Treeton Parish Council is pleased to confirm that this year’s hanging baskets have now been installed throughout the village.

The baskets would normally have been in place at the beginning of June. However, earlier this year Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) informed Parish Councils, at very short notice, that all street lighting columns used for hanging baskets must first undergo structural stress testing before permission would be granted for installation.

Although RMBC introduced this requirement in September 2025, Parish Councils were not informed until April 2026, just weeks before the annual displays were due to be installed. As RMBC owns the lighting columns, the Parish Council had no choice but to wait for the required testing to be completed and permission to be granted before the baskets could be put up.

The delay has inevitably affected the quality of this year’s display. Rather than being installed and cared for throughout June and July, the baskets had to remain in storage with the Council’s supplier while the necessary approvals were obtained. As a result, some baskets may not currently appear as full or vibrant as residents would normally expect.

The hanging baskets are maintained by the Council’s supplier once they are installed, and with regular watering, feeding and ongoing care it is expected that they will continue to flourish over the coming weeks.

Cllr Olly Baum-Dixon, speaking on behalf of the Parish Council, said:

“We know the village hanging baskets are one of the highlights of the summer, and we understand why some residents have been disappointed by this year’s display. We share that disappointment. We are extremely frustrated by the way this process has been handled and by the very short notice given to Parish Councils about the new requirements.”

“The delay of almost two months has had an unavoidable impact on the quality of the baskets, despite them already being in production and ready for installation. The Parish Council had no choice but to wait until RMBC completed the required process and granted permission. We hope residents will see the displays continue to improve over the coming weeks as they receive their normal programme of maintenance.”

The Parish Council would like to thank Hobsons for storing the baskets throughout the delay and for continuing to maintain them for the remainder of the season.

We appreciate residents’ patience and understanding throughout this process and hope everyone enjoys seeing colour return to the village over the coming weeks.
